Introduction

Adding storage gives your system space to boot, load apps, store games, and save files. We cover both traditional 3.5/2.5” SATA(SSD) drives and high-speed M.2 NVMe modules. The main focus are the size and the socket type.

SATA Drive Installation

  1. Mount the drive in a 3.5”/2.5” bay or bracket.
  2. Connect SATA power from PSU and SATA data cable to the motherboard.
  3. Secure with screws or tool-free clips.

M.2 NVMe SSD Installation

  1. Locate the M.2 slot (check manual for supported sizes).
  2. Peel back the standoff spacer—set height (usually 22mm).
  3. Insert the SSD at a 30° angle, then screw it down flat.

Compatibility Tips

  • Check motherboard manual—some M.2 slots share bandwidth with SATA.
  • Some M.2 hard disks are in SATA mode, which is not supported by some motherboards; please check the motherboard manual.
  • Use M.2 slot with heatsink if high load is expected.
  • Ensure SATA ports and power cables are available before cabling.

Troubleshooting

  • M.2 not detected: Verify BIOS is set to NVMe mode.
  • Slow performance: Enable PCIe 4.0 in BIOS if supported.

Types:

  • SATA SSD/HDD: Mount to drive bays, connect with SATA power + data.
  • M.2 NVMe SSDs: Mount directly on motherboard; screw down gently.

Tips:

  • NVMe SSDs share PCIe lanes with other components—check manual to avoid bandwidth conflicts.
  • Some motherboards have heatsinks for M.2—reinstall carefully.
